NUGS-KNUST Election truncated abruptly after SRC EC disrespects the Parliamentary Council
The 13th SRC Parliamentary Council was duly inaugurated in the afternoon of Monday, 20th September, 2021. Rt. Hon. Andrew Anokye Kyeremateng, Speaker of the 13th House took his turn as the chair of the house after he was sworn in by the Judicial Chairperson.
The first sitting of the Parliamentary Council was coupled with the election of NUGS-KNUST. After the SRC EC, Master Obeng Emmanuel was invited into the house by the Speaker, the electoral process began smoothly until there was a display of disrespect and arrogance by the EC.
Upon the request of the honorable members of the House, that the EC should distribute a sample of the ballot papers to delegates (members of parliament) to verify the ballot paper before the start of the election, the EC refrained.
The EC openly disrespected the Speaker and the honourable house and started NAME CALLING and INSULTS to the Speaker and members of the 13th Parliamentary Council. He continuously refused to comply by the directive of the Speaker of Parliament. He was then asked to step aside ad refused to do so too. Before the members of Parliament and the media present, the SRC EC said he was not going to leave and that “the Speaker should move from his seat and come and sack him if he is a man”.
After the controversy, the Dean Of Students walked into the house and spoke to the Speaker. We are yet to ascertain the conversation he had with the Speaker but right after, the Speaker announced that the Election has been suspended indefinitely.
Knust Tiger Eye will continue to follow the story and provide updates subsequently.
