KNUST: Rev. Professor William Obeng-Denteh Receives Top International Recognition


Reverend Professor William Obeng-Denteh has been approved as a Chartered Mathematician by the Chartered Mathematician Panel of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications in the United Kingdom. The Chartered Mathematician (CMath) title represents a high level of professionalism and competence in mathematics. The honour was conferred on him in recognition of his immense skills, values, expertise and commitment to advancing knowledge in mathematics and its applications. 

The Institute of Mathematics and its Application (IMA) exists to support the advancement of mathematical knowledge and its applications to promote and enhance mathematical culture in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, for the public good. It is the professional and learned society for qualified and practicing mathematicians, with a membership of around 5,000 comprising mathematicians from all sectors, as well as those with interest in mathematics.

Rev. Professor Obeng-Denteh is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). He attended Prempeh College and Technology Secondary School, now KNUST Senior High School in Kumasi for his GCE Ordinary and Advanced Level programmes respectively. He attained his Teachers’ Certificate ‘A’ from Offinso Training College in 1996 and he proceeded to earn his BSc (Mathematics) in 2002, MSc (Mathematics) in 2006 and PhD (Pure Mathematics) in 2012 from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana.

 Rev. Professor Obeng-Denteh obtained a Diploma in Theology from the then Christian Service College, now Christian Service University College, Kumasi, Ghana in 2004. He is a Reverend Minister of the Methodist Church Ghana. His inclination is towards Counselling, teaching and preaching the Word of God. 

Rev. Prof. Obeng-Denteh served as Head of the Department of Mathematics for 2017/2018 and 2019/2020 academic years. He spearheaded KNUST Community Seminar on Mathematics and formed several committees to aid the running of the Department. During his tenure, the Department piloted the online submission of students’ theses and assessment by external and internal examiners, Community Engagement and Education Committees of the department in collaboration with the Ghana Mathematics Society, Ashanti Regional Branch, organized a programme at the Kumasi Wesley Girls Senior High School as well as Quiz for Junior High Schools around KNUST.  Prizes were awarded in the forms of certificates and T-shirts from the department. He is a member of several committees. He is the Managing Editor of Journal of Mathematical Acumen and Research. 

Rev. Prof. Obeng-Denteh is interested in Pure Mathematics with areas in Topology, Algebraic Topology, Theory of Differential Equations and Mathematics Education. He is committed to assisting students and researchers to understand the concepts of Topology and Algebraic Topology in both the pure and applied realms. As a result, students have developed interest in the course over the years. He has over 50 publications in refereed journals and has done a number of conference presentations. 

Rev. Prof. Obeng-Denteh is married to Mrs. Martha Obeng-Denteh and the two have been blessed with four children. He loves playing piano during leisure times
