Absa Ghana Supports KNUST’s SONSOL Project

In line with the Vice-Chancellor’s vision to support one needy student with one laptop dubbed ‘SONSOL PROJECT’, Absa Bank Ghana Limited has donated Fifty (50) brand-new Lenovo laptop computers to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

The Corporate Affairs Director, Nana Essilfuah Boison stated that the presentation was in fulfilment of a promise made when her outfit visited the Vice-Chancellor. According to her, Barclays now Absa Bank has been a great partner of KNUST over the years. Absa Bank has a robust business continuity management to protect the needs of their stakeholders, hence, was in full support in providing learning tools to needy students.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson thanked Absa for making the first move in making her vision a reality. She said that the problem of students with financial challenges was real and appealed for more assistance from other corporate institutions. She added that corporate bodies should help mentor these needy students, and imbibe soft skills needed to make them employable in the competitive market. 

Professor Dickson assured the delegation of KNUST’s commitment to ensure that the genuine needy students who meet all parameters required would receive the computers. She informed them that the University has an accurate record of all the needy students and would go by that.

Present at the short ceremony were members of the University Management, and representatives from ABSA Bank; Ellen Ohene Afoakwa, Head of Corporate and Investment Banking Unit, ABSA; Nana Yaa Vandapuije, KNUST; Mr. Elvis Boapeah, Relationship Manager, KNUST; Perry Hackman, Relationship Manager, Brong Ahafo; Francis Banam Damka, Regional Manager for Ashanti, Northern and Brong Ahafo sectors; Mr. Robert Mills, Master Manager, and Irene Darko Asante, KNUST Branch Manageress.

Neglected Roads, Neglected Students: The Perilous Journey of KNUST Students Off-Campus

A dangerous footbridge students use The roads students ply off-campus, especially Ayeduase, home to many students, have long been a source of frustration and danger.  Despite being a key route for students commuting to and from the university, the condition of those roads has continued to deteriorate, with no plans for improvement in sight. The rainy season exacerbates the situation, transforming the roads into a maze of mud and deep potholes. Students are sometimes seen jumping on stones to avoid messing their shoes. During the dry season, the roads are marred by dust and uneven surfaces, making travel uncomfortable and hazardous.   For students off-campus, this means navigating treacherous paths daily, risking their safety and well-being in the process. Adding to the hazards are the open trenches, unsafe bridges and makeshift wooden structures over gutters. KNUST BUDGET READING TURNS CHAOTIC  The 16th KNUST SRC Parliamentary budget reading turned chaotic after members objected to the financial secretary’s fundraising and allocations. Sparking tensions among attendees. Members bemoaned low accountability and clarity in how the budget was read. On 3rd March, Mr. Ohenaku Kelvin the KNUST SRC Financial secretary was according to the constitution of the SRC stipulated to appear before the Parliament House and present budget of the 2023/2024 academic year. After reading a 42 page budget, submissions were made on the budget. According to eye witnesses, the chaos started when the speaker of Parliament gave mandate to only caucus heads to give their submissions.
