Mastercard Foundation Scholars at KNUST Donate to Ejisu Government Hospital
Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program (MCFSP) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the MCFSP at KNUST Scholars Council and the KNUST Scholars Community have in a short ceremony, donated hospital equipment to the Ejisu Government Hospital, Ejisu, a community in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The equipment donated included; five (5) Wheelchairs, five (5) Hospital Ward Screens, a Delivery Bed, and a Patient Monitor. The donation forms part of the KNUST Scholars Community’s celebration of their International Day of Service.
The Scholars’ International Day of Service is a day where Scholars around the globe take time to collectively give-back to their immediate communities. For Mastercard Foundation Scholars, giving back is deeply personal and rooted in their journey as ethical leaders and change-makers in training.
This year’s celebration marks the 6th International Day of Service for the Scholars Community at KNUST.
Speaking on the background of the Scholars Program at KNUST, Ms. Afia Ampomah Awuah, the Program Manager of MCFSP at KNUST, said that, brilliant students who otherwise would not have made it to the university due to economic challenges, are given access to quality tertiary education through comprehensive scholarships that are offered by the Scholars Program at KNUST.
According to Ms. Awuah, aside the classroom training, the scholars are taken through a series of training sessions via internships to sharpen their technical know-how, entrepreneurial training - to enhance their entrepreneurship skills set, ethical leadership training - to strengthen their leadership potentials and other skills training - to equip them with transferable skills set that they can utilise to set up their own small businesses or train others in the community to have alternative source of livelihood, among others.
She said that, the International Day of Service is an annual event where Scholars identify a societal problem that they wish to solve, and each scholar contributes some amount of money towards the goal. This year’s event has brought representatives of the Scholars Community and some officials of MCFSP at KNUST Secretariat to the Ejisu Government Hospital to give-back to help the Hospital serve the people of Ejisu and its environs well.
In his presentation, Mr. Frederick Ennin, President of the Scholars’ Community at KNUST, said that the Scholars have over the years impacted many lives across the country and continue to do so in solving problems in the areas of; Education, Sanitation, Health, Information Communication Technology, Agriculture, Community Development among others. “It should be noted that all our individual and group community projects are aimed at solving societal problems,” he added.
“Based on our assessment and research conducted at the Ejisu Government Hospital, we believe that the equipment we are donating today would go a long way to help in the delivery of quality health care to persons who patronise the services of the Hospital,” he said.
According to the KNUST Scholars Community President, the donation was made possible by the financial contributions of over six hundred MCFSP at KNUST Scholars.
Receiving the equipment, Mr. Alex Abugri, the Administrator of the Hospital, on behalf of the Hospital’s Management and himself, thanked the KNUST Scholars Community and the MCFSP at KNUST Secretariat for their kind gesture towards the Ejisu Government Hospital. He said in his address that the Hospital was in dire need of the equipment donated to them especially the wheelchairs and the delivery bed since the ones the facility possessed were getting weaker due to the number of patients they serve on a daily basis.
Mr. Abugri in his closing remarks mentioned that the impact of the equipment received would go a long way to benefit the Hospital and the community in their healthcare delivery and, therefore, they would take very good care of the equipment. He encouraged other organisations within the Ejisu community, Kumasi and the Ashanti Region to emulate the kind gesture of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at KNUST and also come to their aid.
Present at the event were; Dr. Isaac Asenso Brobbey-Kyei, Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, Mrs. Gladys Buah, the Hospital Nurses’ Manager, Mr. Samuel Nash, Deputy Program Manager, MCFSP at KNUST, Rev. Fr. Dr. Stephen Jantuah, Chief Counsellor, MCFSP at KNUST, some Program Officers of MCFSP at KNUST, Hospital Administrators and Nurses of the Ejisu Government Hospital.
