📌IS THERE A WHITE ELEPHANT AT THE OFFICE OF THE FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES❓

Largest Faculty in KNUST
Greetings to you all my colleagues in the faculty of Social Science. I strongly believe we are all working assiduously towards our impending Mid-Semester Exams and surely we  shall all sail through successfully.

First, this article is to expose a white elephant within the faculty of social sciences.
If we recall very well, last semester, many students within this faculty went to the polls to elect new set of student leaders to man the affairs of the Social Science Faculty. In fact, the process was a hectic one and lovers of the growth of our democracy and student Politics toiled very hard to ensure the right people are elected to serve in the interest of the people and not  in their personal  interest and I still recall how this so called  White elephant pulled and begged  students out of their hall of residents to cast their votes in his favour. This White Elephant is His Excellency Opoku Fofie Prince, the President of the of Social Science Faculty and I say this without any personal thing against him nor his administration nor executives but I am a student trying to face the reality on the ground.

From where I sit and watch this administration, I see him as a so called white elephant as I  explained below. I believe that the primitive goal of every student is to gain clarity and understanding of every lecture he or she attends and anything serving as constraints should not be tolerated.

This current administration led by Prince Opoku Fofie  is not helping to make this goal of students achievable. It looks like the administration is slow, dull and not proactive in anyway. This is due to many reasons but the fact is if this administration cannot do anything, it should not fail in  providing batteries to support microphones which will enhance effective communication during large lecture classes especially at  the New Block where most of us struggle to get to the place and may not hear anything at the end of the lecture.

On the 30th of October, 2019, final year medical geography students had to waste part of their lecture time to get themselves batteries to support the microphone 🎤  before the class commenced. Out of  frustration I made enquiries from the porter of the new block as to when the batteries will be available? His response was that, “we have informed the current student administration of the  faculty to get us batteries a month ago yet to no avail, so till we get the batteries you the students have to search for your own batteries”.

Colleague students, one might argue that it has not been petitioned or did I consult the President personally before this article coming out? But the truth be told, the  President attend lectures in this same classroom as well as the Vice President, Chief of Staff, the Academic Board Chairman and the Speaker of the Social Sciences Parliament.

Mr. White Elephant, be  reminded that, you are a product of a highly ranked department in the University, ninth (9th) in the whole university and first (1st) in the College of Humanities of Social Sciences. In that regard stop tarnishing the reputation of this noble department with your incompetence.
I have  heard you talking about the 49th week celebration of the faculty. In fact you are an empty barrel, surely, you are making the most noise. You are enjoying the legacy of your predecessors but you do not want to leave a legacy behind. You should be ashamed of yourself. An administration which has no plan should not  be tolerated. This administration under your watch cannot accord anything purposeful to assist students as they thrive towards their goals. I am  reminding you of what Dr. Kwame Nkrumah said by reframing it; students of social sciences are not timid as you may suggest. Far from it. They may be slow to anger and take time to organise and act. But once they are ready, they strike and strike hard. It pays no one to temper with the freedom and dignity of students of the Faculty of social sciences. I challenge you to sit up and solve this issue of batteries for microphones immediately and let those you forced to cast their vote in your favour and the entire faculty enjoy what they rightfully deserve. Leadership is not about making announcements from class to class for people to know your position as the President but to tackling the primitive issues affecting students in the biggest faculty in KNUST.

I may end here and wish ourselves the very best in the upcoming Mid-Semester Exams but I will be back shortly after that.

Your friend!
